Is there discrimination against older workers?
Hi:
In BC the largest group of people starting their own businesses are over 55. The reason many of these people are starting their own business is because they have been downsized, rightsized, or otherwise found themself unemployed. They have not been able to find the same or comparable employment.
Often the salaries offered experienced workers are considerably less than their last position. Employers do not want to pay for their years of experience. Also, there seems to be some fears around older workers having health problems or not having the energy to work a full day.
As well, I think that some younger managers might be intimidated or uncomfortable supervising older workers.
Rather than fighting against the trend, better to get on with it. Self-employment is not for the faint of heart, but there are opportunities for creativity, new learning, and development of a successful enterprise. Besides, being self-employed means you can work half-time. Which twelve hours per day do you want?
