The Third Age
Retirement has often been called The Third Age. In this system life span is divided into three parts: until age thirty, thirty to sixty, and sixty to the close of life.
The third age is generally when people have enough money and financial resources so that they do not need to focus all their time and energy on working. Their children are grown, and while they enjoy their grandchildren, they are not responsible for their day-to-day needs.
In the third age people have the time to focus on what is important to them. For some it may be creative pursuits such as singing or painting. Others focus on causes such as the current hot topic - the environment. What is paramount is that people are expressing their values and doing something of meaning to them. By extension, it is often of great importance to many people and adds to the betterment of humankind or the planet.
This expression of the uniqueness of the human spirit is the ultimate fulfilment of many - expressing their values. It brings richness and joy.
